Escuela Velazco Ibarra & Banos

Buenos dias. This is Kelly reporting from Ecuador.

Last Thursday we finished up our work at the elementary school, Escuela Velazco Ibarra. August 10th is Ecuador's independence day, so the children were gathered outside for an assembly. It was nice- we got to listen to some student readings about the significance of the holiday and then they all sang the national anthem. Many of the students we worked with earlier in the week were eager to come talk to us, show us off to their friends, and thank us. Even though we did not have the materials to do proper assessments, it was clear that just spending time and giving individual attention to these children meant something to them. In addition, this experience provided us with an opportunity to see how a typical school functions in Ecuador.

We then spent the long weekend in Banos, a small town in the mountains. It was by far the best weekend trip here. The scenery was beautiful. I was able to convince everyone to go repelling down waterfalls on Saturday, which was an amazing experience. We also took time to relax and enjoy the town. It was a perfect combination.
